I’m interested to know what other skaters think about the continuation of derby names in our sport.

Strange. I don’t agree with this at all.
From a fans perspective, I think derby names make this sport more interesting and unique. And I’ve never thought any of these skaters are less of an athlete because of their persona. In my opinion, It’s just another little thing that makes derby different and much greater than any other sport. I don’t want to see roller derby become something it’s not. -Sammy SlamWhat does everyone else think?
I disagree. I say let’s keep our names as long as possible, let’s not take the crazy out of derby before we are forced to. I know, eventually, derby names will have to go for reasons of legitimacy. But the whole argument of “hiding your talent behind a fake name”? Derby names are an honor to receive, they are a tool of empowerment, they are distinctive and finally, straight up awesome. why rob the sport of this charm and its skaters of the opportunity to feel they can be something or someone more than who they have to be in “real” life?
Bonnie Thunders will skate under her real name for Team USA. That will certainly encourage more skaters to do the same. And if you want to claim your hard earned fame, more power to you! Just let me claim my derby name for a while longer, as I might identify with it more than with my real name.
